In this case, the consensus is accurate and is: Seasons 1-6: Excellent.
GoT is definitely worth watching these seasons
Deep world building, smart dialogue, epic Hollywood-worthy set pieces, professional acting, detailed plot, real surprises, a great soundtrack used sparingly. Season 7: Suddenly you notice that the quality of the writing and plot has dropped significantly. There are inexplicable ideas, inconsistent characterizations, and soap opera drama. But at least the entertainment value is still very high, so it has to be justified. Season 8: This dive will take you to depths you never thought possible.
Fatal for fiction
The writing has become so amateurish that the still fantastic production values are no longer enough to save it. If you ever liked Lost but were surprised by how bad the last season was, you’re in familiar territory here. The biggest problem with last season was that it took us out of the story and made us think about the weaknesses of many. We lost our disbelief. It also ruined the series arcs to the point where rewatching the entire series is pointless.
So can I recommend a GoT marathon for newbies?
Yes, the first 6 seasons are worth the later disappointments. But it’s not the best series of all time. It could have been, but if it drops the ball in the final stretch, it falls behind these great series that are more worthy of a marathon: Battlestar Galactica (2003-2008) Twin Peaks (all 3 seasons and the movie) Breaking Bad
